The interesting implementation of the last PCI-E expansion slot attracts attention. The thing is that it is designed for ROG HYPER M.2 expansion cards, so it can work in x4/x4 mode, however, despite the expansion of eight PCI-E lines, it is not able to work exactly in x8 mode. Either x4/x4 or just x4.
Supply set
The ROG Strix Z690-F Gaming WIFI motherboard comes in a medium sized cardboard box.
On the back, the features of the product are collected, and even a brief summary of technical parameters.
Inside is the motherboard in an antistatic package, and under it you can find:
- quick start instructions, documentation, thank you for your purchase, and more;
- a set of decorative stickers;
- CD with drivers and firmware;
- four black SATA cables with metal latches (two straight, two angled);
- Q-latch, screws, spacers for mounting M.2 drives;
- key holder;
- WIFI antenna with platform;
- a set of black plastic ties.
The use of a CD in a not particularly cheap product raises questions.
Appearance
As with many other products of the ROG series, the appearance of the board is good, however, a little later it turns out that a lot of plastic is used in the design. Of the curiosities, the button to open the latch of the PCI-E x16 slot, as well as the Velcro clamp in the area of the chipset, which is designed to help with cable management, will definitely make you pay attention. The textolite is partially hidden behind the M.2 cooling radiators.
There is nothing noteworthy on the back.
The hit parade “thanks to the engineers” reveals the presence of LGA115x mounting holes, which significantly expands the list of compatible cooling systems, and can also potentially save money for the future owner.
The LGA1700 socket, as well as the RAM slots, are typical.
The power subsystem is represented by 17 phases (16+1), controlled by the Renesas RAA 229131 PWM controller. More than enough for overclocking experiments.
A powerful radiator is responsible for cooling.
Four M.2 slots are provided, each of them covered by a radiator. The first M.2_1 slot is connected directly to the processor. Support for the PCI-E 4.0 x4 interface and the ability to use 2242/2260/2280/22110 drives is provided.


Other slots connected to the chipset:
- M.2_2 works at PCI-E 4.0 x4 speed, designed for 2242/2260/2280 drives.
- M.2_3 works at PCI-E 4.0 x4 speed, designed for 2242/2260/2280/22110 drives.
- M.2_4 works at PCI-E 4.0 x4 speed, designed for 2242/2260/2280 drives. This is the only slot that supports the M.2 SATA standard.


As mentioned earlier, they all have radiators.
Two interesting elements are located in the chipset area. Let’s start with the PCI-E slot unlock button – it’s a lever on a cable, very simple, but how ingenious! This makes it easy to remove the graphics card without having to break into the PCI-E slot latch with a long screwdriver or something similar.
Also here you can find a velcro clamp intended for a cable tie, if it is removed.
The Intel Z690 chipset is cooled by a small heatsink fixed with screws. Contact with the chipset crystal is made through a thermal pad.
The area of the audio tract is separated from the main part of the textolite. Realtek ALC4082 is responsible for sound.
Network capabilities come in the form of Intel I225-V for 2.5G Ethernet, while Bluetooth and WIFI are handled by Intel AX210.
It’s time to walk around the edges of the textolite. The CMOS battery is located directly under the first PCI-E slot, in an impractical place, because it will be covered by the video card. However, we mention the presence of a magic button to unlock the slot, and this no longer seems like a problem. On the lower left, you can find the HD_AUDIO pin, a 4-pin fan pin, two RGB ADD_GEN2 pins, a Thunderbolt pin, COM_DEBUG, and two USB 2.0 pins.
To the right you can find the TPM external module pin, thermal sensor pin, BMC_HEADER, three four-pin fan pins, front panel pin, USB 3.0 (USB 3.2 Gen 1) pin, USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (Type-C) pin, and six SATA ports .
Up top are two more RGB pads, a POST LED area, two four-pin fan pads, and a CPU_OVERVOLTAGE safety switch
The I/O panel is equipped with a plug straight from the factory, from the specific you can find the BIOS FlashBack button and LED. As usual, there are:
