Intel Celeron G6900 processor review and testing. The office plug is free

[ad_1]

Although not immediately, the LGA 1700 platform received budget-class processors at its disposal. Everyone knows about the excellent performance of Alder Lake’s single core, which is worth the performance of Celeron at the level of Core i9-10900K in Geekbench’s single-threaded test! In addition, in this next period of intensified competition on the processor market, even today…, sorry, the budget processor is not just increased clock frequency and allocated an even larger processor cache, as was the case with the Celeron G5905, but also given AVX2 instructions, a new IGP , and the icing on the cake is the return of our long-awaited overclocking capabilities! Meet the office “plug free” Celeron G6900!

Let’s consider it in more detail against the background of its predecessors.

The table confirms the fact that the Celeron G6900 definitely did not receive the necessary simplification, and judging by the characteristics, it should be no worse than the flagship Pentium Gold of previous generations, and maybe even Intel Core i3-9100.

Supply set

The processor comes in a cardboard box with moderate printing, but even here the Celeron G6900 shows its place to all its predecessors, because its box is larger than that of the Core i9 of previous generations (we are silent about the Skylake packaging, it was a long time ago). As always, there is a cut-out on the top that allows you to see the processor inside.

The box contains:

  • processor;
  • Intel Laminar RS1 cooler
  • documentation and sticker.

The processor of the budget segment has changed its shape. It should be recalled that the budget class did not change its physical dimensions for 18 years (since the release of LGA 775), they were 37.5×37.5 mm squares. Now we are dealing with 37.5×45 mm rectangles. And, of course, the fasteners of the cooling systems have changed, but that’s another story. This is what the test subject looks like:

The capabilities of the complete Intel Laminar RS1 cooler are sufficient for this processor, a comparison can be found in the testing section. The radiator is completely aluminum and has a typical contact area, as in coolers of the old model:

Processor capabilities

Intel Alder Lake is a docked architecture, so it supports both DDR4 and DDR5 standard RAM. If the chipset allows fine-tuning of the memory, then the Celeron will not put a stick in the wheels and will be happy to start at the conventional frequency of DDR4-4266.

A local revolution took place in the arsenal of processor instructions. For the first time, the office Celeron received AVX2 support, which promises a noticeable increase in the corresponding software. We are still waiting for 2 cores without HT support and without turbo mode, running at 3.4 GHz.

On board there is a built-in UHD Graphics 710 of the Intel Xe architecture, aka Gen12, which we have already seen in Rocket Lake processors. This means that the user will get a hardware AV1 decoder, support for the operation of four independent displays with a maximum resolution of 8k@60Hz for DP and 4k@60Hz for HDMI. The vulnerable place, as expected, is the computing body: 128 shader processors, 8 texturing blocks, 8 blocks of raster operations.
