Deepcool Gammaxx GT CPU cooler review

[ad_1]

The hot summer season is a great time to test cooling systems. Peak ambient temperatures force the cooler to show their best. And we want to start with a test subject called Deepcool Gammaxx GT. In appearance, this is an ordinary radiator, exactly until all the built-in illumination lights up on it. But first things first.

Packing and scope of delivery

The box of the cooler is well designed, in color printing, with a minimum of marketing and useful technical information. Inside, the device is protected from damage by a plastic insert and several small polyurethane dampers.

The delivery set of the Deepcool Gammaxx GT is rich and varied, this is due to the large number of supported processor sockets, and with a specific backlight system. In addition to the radiator, there are the following details:

  • catalog of current Deepcool products;
  • installation instructions;
  • syringe with thermal paste;
  • backlight control panel for two SATA Power powered devices;
  • adapter for two devices for a standard 12V GRB backlight connector;
  • 120mm backlit fan;
  • two sets of metal brackets for mounting two fans;
  • plastic reinforcement plate for Intel and AMD sockets;
  • mounting feet for AMD sockets with pre-installed screws;
  • four metal stands for mounting feet;
  • two small screws for fixing the mounting feet;
  • four nuts for fastening the reinforcement plate;
  • mounting feet for Intel sockets with pre-installed screws.

Appearance

Appearance Deepcool Gammaxx GT is quite standard for this class of tower devices. It is made according to the classic U-shaped layout of heat pipes and has medium dimensions. Except that the fan mounting brackets stick out slightly to the sides, increasing the overall width of the cooler to 135 mm.

The fan is attached to the radiator with wire brackets. In terms of depth, the device is relatively narrow, which inspires hope for good height compatibility with RAM.

The layout of the 120 mm fan frame is generally standard, but in the middle it is reinforced with additional stiffeners, and rubber dampers against vibration are glued to the corners on both sides. Of the aerodynamic optimizations, notches can be noted on the translucent impeller, which has nine blades of the usual, slightly curved configuration. The propeller is made on the basis of a hydraulic bearing, has a speed range from 500 to 1500 rpm, variable using PWM. In terms of noise level, everything is relatively good, within 500-800 rpm the impeller is almost inaudible, in digital terms it is from 37 to 40 dB (A), if measured with a sound level meter attached close to the bearing. Further, the noise level gradually increases up to a maximum of 52 dB (A) at 1500 rpm, but it will not work to call it annoying. Of the parasitic overtones, only crackling from the PWM controller can be noted. RGB diodes are built in around the perimeter of the stator, so when it is turned on, all the blades are illuminated evenly. There are two connection cables, both wrapped in a nylon braid. The first is a four-pin power connector, 285 mm long, the second is a backlight control connector, also with four pins, with a latch. The length of this cable already reaches 390 mm.

A beautiful metal plate on top with slots and blotches imitating the ends of heat pipes looks rather unusual on the radiator. Underneath is a translucent plastic insert that houses the RGB LEDs. From it, as well as from the fan, another backlight control cable in a nylon braid, 400 mm long, has four pins and a latch on the connector. Under this wire, a special notch is even made in the radiator.

There is also a notch on the reverse side, but already along the entire height of the radiator. By the way, no matter how much we measured it, the height was not 156 mm, declared by the manufacturer, but 157 mm. It is possible that the top trim does not always shrink to the same depth. The total heat dissipation area here is about 7200 cm2, which is quite good for this class of radiators.

The heatsink has four 6mm diameter copper heatpipes arranged in a U-shape and quite tightly assembled in a diamond shape (when viewed from above) in the left and right sections of the fins.

The gap between the aluminum radiator fins is 2mm, which promises good airflow permeability.

In this form, the user will see his cooler most of the time, provided that the case has a side window:

Heat pipes are fastened together with a gray metal plate with the inscription Deepcool. It is made as simply as possible, without unnecessary relief. On the sides there are recesses with single holes for the screws, where the mounting feet lie when mounting the cooler.

On the sides, the copper tubes are pressed quite tightly, without visible gaps. Unfortunately, it was not possible to determine visually whether there is solder, or at least glue, at the contact point.

The base is made using direct contact technology. The gap between the tubes is 2 mm. The sole is relatively flat, but the quality of grinding and processing here leaves much to be desired.

Since not all users are happy owners of motherboards that can control RGB lighting and have suitable connectors, Deepcool has carefully provided this cooler with its own RGB remote control. It is powered by a SATA Power connector, the length of the cord is 395 mm. The remote itself has a length of 55 mm and three buttons. The M key is responsible for the cyclic change of modes and backlight colors. If you go in order, the remote control allows you to play red, green, blue, orange, purple, cyan and white, both in the constant glow mode and “breathing”. After that, there are three modes with a change of colors, then everything repeats. The middle key allows you to adjust the brightness of the backlight in five levels. If you hold it down for a few seconds, then the backlight can be turned off completely. The S button allows you to select the playback speed of the current effect, also in five options, from slow to very fast. The length of the wires of the two connectors that connect to the fan and radiator is 170 mm.

For those who still managed to get a board with a 12VGRB connector, there is an adapter 400 mm long in the kit. When connecting, be sure to make sure that the 12 V pin goes to 12 V on the motherboard connector, since there is no protection against incorrect connection.
