Overview of SATA SSD Kingston DC500M 480GB. When Endurance Matters

[ad_1]

Continuing the theme of reviews of Kingston Data Center drives, let’s take a look at the DC500M model, which guarantees endurance up to 9110 TBW and is the flagship SSD with SATA 3.0 (6 Gb / s) interface. The drive is designed for mixed workloads such as caching, transactional system, large database, streaming server, cloud application. For each task, you can choose the required volume: 480 GB, 960 GB, 1.92 TB or 3.84 TB. The manufacturer provides all products with a five-year warranty, as well as free technical support.

The entire line of Kingston drives with an eye to use in the data center includes the following series:

Today’s test subject comes in a cardboard blister. On the front side of the package there is a holographic sticker, the presence of which indicates that the product has been officially imported to our market.

There is nothing extra in the kit. The design of the test subject does not differ from other 2.5-inch products. A typical solid state drive in a gray metal case. All the basic information about it is collected on a sticker on the front. On the right is a round warranty seal.

Standard dimensions – 69.9x100x7 mm. Below and on the sides there are typical mounting holes, on one of the ends there are the usual power and data connectors.

To cool the controller, an SSD case is used, heat to which is transferred through a thermal pad.

The SSD in question consists of:

  • 10 NAND Flash memory chips FH64B08UCN1-41 (3D TLC, 64 GB each);
  • six A337C tantalum capacitors (330uF 10V);
  • two DRAM chips Kingston D5128ACPCPGPH (DDR4 512 MB)
  • Phison PS3112-S12DC controller.

The components are located on both sides of the PCB. There are seats for more tantalum capacitors, two cans of DRAM, and six NAND Flash chips. The neighbor in the DC500R line is equipped with one DRAM chip and two NAND Flash chips less than the DC500M. Well, 128 GB of additional spare area and double RAM buffer cannot but rejoice.

Kingston Data Center series server SSDs, unlike available consumer products, are guaranteed a fixed memory type – TLC. If the specification on the Kingston official website indicates the type as “3D NAND” or is not specified at all, then the memory type can be either TLC or QLC (typical for budget SSD series such as A400 or NV1, for which the manufacturer tries keep prices affordable for the widest possible range of buyers).

The Phison PS3112-S12DC controller has been talked about more than once. It is manufactured using a 28nm process technology, supports eight memory channels, AES-256 hardware encryption, power loss protection, LDPC 3.0 ECC (error correction and coding).
