Here comes the second ten of our most anticipated games of 2021. It has many interesting non-AAA options, but we hope all of them will become hits and delight gamers with dozens of hours of playthrough. Not without high-profile releases, console exclusives and unusual long-term construction. In addition, most games do not have an exact release date, which means that we hope for this year and do not want to see them in the same top for 2022.
Horizon: Forbidden West
At the PlayStation 5 presentation in June, Guerrilla Games announced the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn called Horizon: Forbidden West.
Aloy’s life is getting better, but an unknown infection has appeared in the world that destroys plants and animals. In order to find a cure for the misfortune, the heroine goes on an adventure to mysterious lands and finds out that Silens, who she knows from the first part, is involved in this business, and now has his own tribe.
Horizon: Forbidden West promises underwater locations and an abundance of new types of robots. Despite the release of Horizon Zero Dawn on PC, the future game will be exclusive (at least for now) to the PlayStation 5 and should be released on the PlayStation 4. The exact release date has not yet been disclosed, but just recently Sony clarified that the game should be expected in 2021.
GhostWire: Tokyo
Sony also spoke about the release date for the new game by Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil 1 and 4, called Ghostwire: Tokyo. The Japanese promised that the project of Tango Gameworks studio, with which Mikami works, will be released in October 2021 on PC and PS5.
However, very little is known about the game. Ghostwire: Tokyo will be a first-person action game set in Japanese urban legends. The scene of the story is Tokyo. Of the chips, combat magic with elements of melee combat is declared.
How all this is implemented is not yet clear, and Tango Gameworks is known for The Evil Within series, which is far from action games. In any case, it is worth waiting for something atmospheric, which Shinji Mikami always succeeds in, but for the gameplay it is still alarming.
Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart
At the PS5 presentation, Sony revealed the second part of the popular Ratchet & Clank platformer, subtitled Rift Apart, and recently confirmed that the game will be released in 2021. The exact release date, or even the approximate month, was not reported, but it is known that it will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5.
Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart makes full use of the new and fast SSD consoles – the main character instantly moves through portals between worlds and different locations, and it all looks spectacular and does not allow the gameplay to sag. At least, this is the idea of the creators, but we will find out how everything will actually be after the release.
Grand Touring 7
In 2021, Polyphony Digital is due to release a new installment in the Gran Turismo series of popular car simulators. The seventh game will provide gamers with realistic car physics, the main plus of this franchise, a huge number of models, excellent graphics and many small but important details.
At the helm of Gran Turismo 7 is Kazunori Yamauchi – the game designer responsible for the previous parts of the series, long and beloved by fans for a long time. So something good is definitely worth waiting for.
Gran Turismo 7 will be released in 2021 exclusively on the PlayStation 5. At least that’s all we know for now. There is no exact date, as well as at least an approximate release month.
Gotham Knights
In the middle of last year, Warner Bros. Entertainment has announced Gotham Knights, a third-person superhero action game set in the DC Comics universe. The game belongs to the world of Batman: Arkham, but there will be no famous bat, because according to the plot, Batman died. There are four main characters here at once, and all of them are well known not only to fans of comics, but also to almost any modern geek: Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin. Everyone will have their own style of passage, skill tree, weapons and special skills. Between the characters will switch before missions.
The four superheroes will continue to defend Gotham from crime in single and multiplayer modes. Of the main antagonists, Mr. Freeze and the Court of Owls were shown, but the creators promise to add many more well-known villains to them.
In addition, the developers from WB Games Montreal talk about the attention to the story, which will capture without co-op, and the lack of grinding. Gotham Knights will be released on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S in 2021, but the exact date has not yet been announced.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II
Ninja Theory has announced Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II in 2019. During this, the creators were bought by Microsoft, but we hope this did not affect the creation of the game. Is that only positive, adding resources to them and making the publisher of Xbox Game Studios.
In the sequel, the main character Senua will go to Iceland. The developers promise to significantly increase the universe and greatly tighten the graphics. The latter is clearly visible in the trailer, but it is hardly worth waiting for such a level of picture, it is too beautiful. But it must be somewhere close.
The folk group Heilung is working on creating an additional atmosphere in the form of music, writing tracks to Old Norse texts. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II will be released on PC, Xbox Series X and S. The PlayStation 5 has not yet been announced, but it is possible that the game will appear on this platform a little later.
Humankind
On April 22, 2021, a new turn-based strategy game from Amplitude Studios, the creators of Endless Space and Endless Legend, is coming to PC only. The game is called Humankind and is a solid competitor to the Civilization series.
The creators have long and openly said that their projects are aimed at competing with the great franchise, and millions of sales convince of the success of the idea. At the same time, no one copies Tsiva completely, because that would be stupid. Humankind, like other studio games, has a lot of historical context and similar visual elements. But there are major differences in gameplay mechanics and faction development. This is more than enough for a new successful game.
Humankind promises a large-scale impact of the gamer’s actions on the world around him and on himself, up to changing the avatar and opening new looks.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
There are not so many Lord of the Rings games to miss a new project that is not even AAA-category, so The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has every chance of becoming one of them. The game is published and developed by Daedalic Entertainment, the authors of the Deponia series and other similar games. It seems like not a lot, but you need to give them a chance.
In The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, they promise to show Gollum and his second personality Smeagol in detail, and also reveal the positive and negative sides of the character. Due to the nature of the hero, the gameplay for the most part will be stealth, but combat skills and tricks for finishing off and destroying opponents are announced.
The plot of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum begins with the capture of Gollum in the tower of Sauron in Barad-dur. In addition to her, many other familiar locations and heroes are promised, including Thranduil and the Nazgul.
The project is expected in 2021 on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, and Xbox One. True, the exact date or approximate month of release has not yet been reported.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide
In mid-2020, the Swedish studio Fatshark, the creators of Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide and Warhammer: Vermintide 2, announced a new game in the Warhammer 40,000 universe with the prefix Darktide in the title. The project will be released on PC, Xbox Series X and S. The exact date has not yet been announced.
The game should be an atmospheric and gloomy cooperative action shooter with four main characters and an army of creatures as protagonists. The action of the plot of Warhammer 40,000: Darktide will unfold in the hive city of Tertium, where gamers will have to destroy huge hordes of creatures of Chaos of a heretical cult that is trying to seize control of the planet.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide promises thoughtful close combat and a sophisticated shooting system. It seems like there will be classes with a skill tree and improvements, but so far little is known about the details. In any case, we are waiting for some kind of Warhammer: Vermintide 2, but already in space and with elements of horror.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2
There are few chances for this, but in 2021 we are waiting for the release of STALKER 2. This figure is in the release date of the game, and the creators of GSC Game World shared such plans. True, this is hard to believe, because so far there are no full-fledged gameplay videos, screenshots and other things, which means that the game is at an early stage of development. At the same time, all this can be done on purpose to further stir up interest in the project, and in the meantime toss crumbs of information to fans.
There are no plot details for STALKER 2 either. But in the recently released gameplay teaser, the stalker Skif was shown, so it is believed that he will become the main character of the game.
STALKER 2 promises an open world with an updated version of the A-Life intelligent system. According to the developers, the Zone will live on its own without the slightest intervention of the player. In the best traditions of the series, the plot will be branched, and multiple endings will be reached in different ways.
The long-awaited shooter is scheduled for PC and Xbox Series X/S, as revealed at the launch trailer, and will not release on PS4 or Xbox One. The game will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. With the release on the PlayStation 5, nothing is clear yet – either it will not happen at all, or STALKER 2 will be released on the new Sony console, but much later.
That’s our entire list of expectations for 2021. Partially, of course, it will not come true, but I would really like to see releases of at least the most basic games in the next 12 months, including STALKER 2, Horizon: Forbidden West, GhostWire: Tokyo and many other projects mentioned in this and the first collection. What are you waiting for? Of course, we couldn’t tell you about all the worthy games that should be released this year, so write in the comments of your expectation leaders if we missed them.
