The line of ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED laptops with tablet mode support is aimed at everyday use and representatives of creative professions, such as designers and artists. First of all, thanks to the presence of an extremely successful touch OLED display and a stylus in the kit. The copy that got to us for review is labeled UP5401EA-KN094W and is based on an Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor from the Tiger Lake U family with Willow Cove architecture. It is an energy-efficient model with four physical cores and eight threads, capable of operating at maximum frequencies from 2.8 to 4.7 GHz, depending on the load on the cores and the thermal package. The built-in graphics chip Intel Iris Xe Graphics, if necessary, allows even light game projects at a low or medium level of graphics settings. Although the main purpose of this graphics is hardware acceleration of work applications and programs.

Supply set

The laptop comes in a nice looking gray box with a carrying handle to keep the box from opening if the packing seal is broken. Stickers with serial numbers and a list of the main technical characteristics of the product are pasted on the side and back of the package.

The laptop is originally packaged in such a way that when the box is opened, it seems to slide out and rise from it by itself. The case for the device is hidden behind the top cover of the box, everything else is on the bottom and side of the box.

The device comes with a native case, a power supply unit and a power cable for it, an adapter from the USB port to RJ45 for connecting wired Internet, a stylus and various documentation.

The power supply unit of the A20-100P1A model can deliver up to 100 W of power and has a size of 75x75x29 mm. The length of the fixed USB Type-C cable reaches 1.5 meters. A separate power cord with a Euro plug is 0.8 meters long.

Appearance

The case of the ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED has a gray color and is made of strong and light aluminum alloy. It copes well with the load of diagonal twisting, and even with the screen raised. To emphasize the overall endurance of the laptop, the manufacturer declares the device to meet the MIL-STD810H military standard. The top panel of the display has the ASUS logo shifted to the right. Grinding “waves” imperceptible to the touch diverge from it in concentric circles. The surface collects dust and fingerprints well, so it will have to be cleaned quite often. On the inside, the ErgoLift hinges are made of technological growths, on which the lid rests at large tilt angles.

The leather cover is made in the style of an envelope. On the front side, you can see the embossed Zenbook inscription. The hinged part is held on by a magnet, and inside the fold is a stretchy mount for the stylus.

The bottom panel of the laptop has sloping edges on the sides and front. Speaker openings are located closer to the front, and ventilation system outlet grills are located behind on the sides. The bottom is flat, with four rubber feet at the corners, and ventilation intakes, closer to the back of the case.

At the back, between reinforced 360-degree hinges, there is another ventilation grille.

The indentation in the middle of the front lower face allows you to lift the cover, but it will not be possible to open it completely with one hand, since it is held in the closed state by four magnets. This is probably done so that the laptop does not accidentally open in tablet mode.

HDMI ports and two USB Type-C with Thunderbolt 4 are mounted on the left side, which can also be used to charge the device. There are three narrowed slits in the middle to improve ventilation.

On the right side there is one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, a combined 3.5 mm headset jack, three more vents, a MicroSD card reader, and dot indicators for device activity and battery charge.

The adapter from USB to RJ45 looks too big and inflexible. The network activity indicator is arranged in it near the cable entrance. But the main problem is the completely glossy body, which instantly collects all the dust and fingerprints.

This is what the laptop looks like with the adapter connected:

A nice accessory of this model is the ASUS Pen SA201H branded stylus. It is made in a metal case with a plastic cover behind and has dimensions of 150×9.5 mm and a weight of 20 grams. It works on MPP 2.0 technology, distinguishes 4096 degrees of pressure in the force range from 14 to 450 grams, taking into account the angle of inclination up to 45 degrees inclusive. With it, you can “draw” lines with a minimum thickness of up to 0.2 mm. There are two mechanical buttons in the front part of the swing. The lower one is responsible for “erasing”, the upper one performs the function of the right mouse button. It is powered by a battery of an unusual AAAA format, which should last for about a year of operation. In theory, you can find and order replacement rods for it.

ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED has several operating modes, depending on the display angle. Up to and including 180 degrees, it works like a regular laptop. At a tilt of more than 110 degrees from the horizontal, the lower part rises, resting on the display stands. The technology is called ErgoLift, it improves cooling and creates a richer sound by forming a “chamber” relative to the surface of the table.

The display frames are quite narrow and aesthetic — only 4.3 mm on the sides, and 5.8 mm on top. There is a webcam window in the center at the top, and two microphones on either side of it.

Special reinforced hinges allow the laptop to be unfolded up to 180 degrees and more. The manufacturer guarantees for them up to 20 thousand cycles of opening and closing without damage.

In the range of 180 to 360 degrees, the system should go into tablet mode and rotate the screen according to the tilt, but Windows 11 does not. In general, in this operating system, “tablet mode” is a separate topic for conversation. Therefore, it is unlikely that you will be able to fully use the laptop in the “tent” version.

When switching to full tablet mode, the keyboard and touchpad are automatically turned off.

I personally really liked the ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED keyboard. Despite the lack of a digital block, on the right side there are separate dedicated Home, PgUp, PgDn, End keys and spaced arrow keys, which makes it much easier to work with large text arrays. At the top there are separate PrtSc, Insert, Delete. In general, the ANSI standard is used, the island-type buttons are recessed relative to the body level. The pantograph (scissors) mechanisms are installed under the buttons, which ensure uniform pressing with a total stroke of 1.4 mm. The English and Ukrainian layouts are softly and clearly illuminated in white with three levels of brightness. Indicators for Caps Lock, microphone and camera activity are built into the corresponding buttons. It should also be noted separately the launch button, with a built-in fingerprint scanner in the upper right corner.

The sensitive touchpad has dimensions of 130×75 mm. Its surface is matte and slippery to the touch. Mechanical keys are hidden under the left and right lower corners. It supports the recognition of four fingers at the same time and a large number of intuitive gestures. If you hold your finger in the upper right corner for a second, the ASUS NumberPad technology will turn on and the illuminated contours of the buttons of the virtual touch digital block will appear on the touchpad. The icon in the upper left corner (if you hold your finger on it) allows you to change one of the two levels of backlight brightness.
